Current Projects

Green Anglers of Manitoba boy with fish

On August 15 2009, the Green Anglers of Manitoba put on a
fishing derby / shoreline clean up with all proceeds going towards Red River Operation Clean Up.  Although the day was wet, over 600 pounds of garbage was picked up from the east shoreline of Lockport. Afterwords, a fishing derby/ Bar B Q was held and various prizes were up for grabs.

The day was a success and we plan on holding the second annual next year.  Please come back to our web site at rroc.ca
under the Projects
category for more details. Tim Hoover and Glen Konowalchuk are the founders of Green Anglers Manitoba and the inspiration behind this fishing derby and clean up event.  Please consider participating at next year's event.

Restore a Shoreline Project

The Restore a Shoreline Project provides the opportunity to bring together business, local government and the public to address environmental water concerns. It provides a win-win solution for everyone who has a stake in the future of our waterways.

Program Components:

The Restore a Shoreline program would be a demonstration project and an educational awareness program aimed at assisting residents to better protect our waterways by changing their waterfront (and near waterfront) landscaping and living habits. The program would seek to avoid problems caused by landscaping, sedimentation and other processes that encourage contaminants to enter our water resources, threatening the health of people and wildlife. Buffer zones of appropriate plants/vegetation and changes in our living habits can make the difference in efforts to keep our lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, springs, sinks, swamps, and marshes as healthy functioning ecosystems.  The project would involve the creation of a few demonstration buffer strip projects along the Red River in cooperation with the Riparian Health Council. The projects would demonstrate to landowners the attractiveness of these buffers as well as how they function in protecting the water body.  A goal would be to develop educational materials on buffers to distribute to citizens and other interested parties.

Shoreline Survey Project

The Shoreline Survey is a visual survey of the river, based on data sheets and protocols created by the Adopt-A-Stream Program. The Shoreline Survey is designed to provide a qualitative overview of the river and to identify problems to be solved and resources to be protected. Shoreline Surveys provide groups with direct field experience that enables them to take action to protect the waterway. The data sheets would cover such topics as natural stream and lake conditions, land use, recreational opportunities, wildlife, areas of pollution and riparian vegetation. Shoreline Surveys can be used to:

  • generate baseline data
  • build a strong constituency for the waterway
  • determine priorities and take action
  • identify riparian areas in need of conservation for species and habitat protection;
  • design water quality monitoring programs around specific sites
  • raise awareness in communities through forums, events, brochures, and river cleanups of the problem sites
  • protect land
  • create new access sites

Funding:

The Adopt-A-Shoreline can raise money through corporate sponsorships and can be used to protect our local waterways.  The program will raise funds by recruiting national, provincial and local business sponsors that will pay for signs containing their names and logos, aligning them with a positive environmental message and enhancing their image as good corporate citizens. In exchange for 50% of the sponsorship revenues, they will be allowed a limited number of the signs to be placed on appropriate roads and parking lots throughout the region. The funds raised from this program will be reinvested back into the program as well as to Operation Clean-Up.  Depending on the success of the project, funds may be invested in projects that further protection/enhancement of water including such things as pollution prevention activities, cleanup solutions, watershed cleaning, riparian restoration, river bottom forest protection and watershed education.  Out of the 50% that the organization keeps, they will pay for the creation, installation and upkeep of the signs, as well as for an educational outreach program—at no cost to taxpayers.  A request will also go forward asking the Provincial Government to match what ever funding is raised to show their support and recognition of the project.

Long-Term Projects

Adopt-A-Shoreline Project

The Adopt-A-Shoreline project promotes education, public outreach, citizen involvement, partnership development and community capacity-building through Manitoba’s Red River valley and Interlake diverse communities.

Program Components:

This initiative is a garbage and litter collection program modeled after Manitoba’s successful Adopt-A-Highway Program. Businesses, organizations or individuals volunteer to be responsible for the annual clean up of a particular piece of shoreline.  A commitment of at least two years is required – allowing enough time for volunteers to see a change as a result of their efforts.  The program provides an opportunity for the public to take an active role in helping to keep our waterways free of litter. The main objective is to preserve and protect Manitoba’s waters for both human and wildlife needs. A component of the project would be the development of a “how-to kit” that would provide an overview of the program and would answer the basic questions that a volunteer/volunteer organization might ask, such as "Why would I want to get involved?”.  The kit would also provide information on how to organize a cleanup. More specific details in the how-to kit could include:

  • how to get a cleanup group together
  • how to promote a cleanup
  • how to document a cleanup
  • how to work with landowners
  • how to keep a safe while cleaning up
  • what to do with the refuse
