fishingline.jpg Red River Operation Clean Up (RROC)  began as a grassroots initiative led by a local citizen with a passion for the environment. Established in 1999, it is a shining example of how working together for a common cause can bring about success.

Recognizing that the clean up of the Red River is a collective responsibility, key stakeholders have pooled their resources and partnered to create an organization whose goal is to enhance the water quality of the Red River and significantly reduce the debris left along its banks.

Water quality in Manitoba’s Red River and Lake Winnipeg has deteriorated over the years. There are several causes to this deterioration, and the accumulation of garbage and litter along these waterways has only exacerbated the problem.

Every summer, our employees place numerous 45 gallon drums along the banks of the Red River, in an effort to collect trash from those who frequent these areas. The drums are emptied daily and the shores are cleaned of any other debris or trash. We have also initiated a litter collection program whereby business and groups of volunteers take responsibility for the clean up of a particular section of the riverbank.

RROC also promotes education, public outreach, citizen involvement, partnership development and community capacity building.
